McDonald's fans fuming after popular breakfast item quietly axed

Fans have kicked off after one of their favourites has come off the menu after five years

McDonald's fans are furious that the fast food chain has taken off a popular breakfast item, which has been a staple for five years.

The breakfast menu, which runs at its restaurants until 11am everyday, has seen various changes over the years, having launched the new Sausage Sandwich just earlier this month after a successful trial.

The £1.99 sandwich - which consists of a pork patty, cheese and either ketchup or brown sauce - dropped on menus on 10 September, although not everyone was sold on it after some people realised it was essentially a Sausage and Egg McMuffin without the egg.

The day it launched, a number of items bowed out to make wake for the new, including the Spicy Chicken McNuggets, Big Tasty, Chilli Cheese Bites, Milky Way McFlurry and Steakhouse Steak.

But it seems there's another old favourite that's also had the chop without any of us realising.

The Breakfast Roll showed real sticking power after it first graced the menu in 2020. Featuring smoky bacon, a free-range egg and melted cheese with a choice of either ketchup or brown sauce, it's long been a winner with diners - but no more, as the £4.69 breakfast sandwich (and ultimate hangover cure) has now been taken off the menu, as the chain undergoes a menu overhaul.

On social media the news has not gone down well, and fans are raging that the Breakfast Roll isn't available anymore.

One person wrote on Reddit: "Removing the breakfast bagel? An act of aggression. Removing the triple cheeseburger? A show of power.

"But now removing the breakfast roll… this is surely an act of war?"

Another wrote: "This is how I find out they've removed the breakfast roll. I don't go very often but that's the only thing I really liked any more. Oh well, goodbye Ronald."

A third was devastated as they added: "What, there getting rid of the breakfast roll? Noooooo."

Another Reddit user, who appears to work at the chain, gave some insider thoughts as they shared: "I don’t even understand why the breakfast roll is going. All of the components of a breakfast roll we use on other things. It would make more sense to remove the breakfast wraps IMO. They take ages to roll up and get in the boxes."

However some optimistic fans have hoped that the removal means other items could have a comeback, or even something new. One person posted on Reddit: "Hoping they are making space to bring back the bagel lol."

Another shared: "Bring back the bagel breakfast sandwich, that was elite."

Speaking to Birmingham Live, a McDonald's spokesperson gave an official comment as they said: "We're always evolving our menu with our customers in mind to keep things fresh and exciting."

The disappearance of the Breakfast Roll isn't the only thing the fast food retailer has taken away recently, as fans were left frustrated when McDonald's pulled the plug on a brand-new menu item just over a week after it first hit restaurants.

The Caramel Loaded McFlurry had everything it needed to be a surefire hit, and was packed with ice cream, caramel cubes, milk chocolate chips and white chocolate-coated shortbread pieces, all topped with caramel sauce.

However, it's not meant to be, as it’s already been axed. Speaking to FOODbible, a spokesperson for McDonald’s said: “We are aware of a quality control issue relating to the Caramel Loaded McFlurry and can confirm that the item has been removed from our menu.

"At McDonald’s, we place a strong emphasis on quality control and are disappointed by any instance where we fall short of our standards. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
