An eye-watering 122,000 cases of Gatorade have been recalled across the United States over undeclared food dyes, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed.
28-ounce bottles of the popular sports beverage, which is the official sports drink of the NFL, MLB, and NBA, were recalled by PepsiCo on 25 September.
Flavours including Lemon Lime, Lemon Lime Zero, Orange, and Orange Zero are believed to contain undisclosed Yellow No. 6 and possibly Yellow No 5.
The former, also known as Sunset yellow FCF or E110, is a synthetic, petroleum-derived dye that EU officials claim may ‘have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children’.

Meanwhile, Yellow No. 5, commonly referred to as tartrazine and E102, is an artificial food colouring that the FDA is working towards eliminating from the food industry.

It’s understood that 122,021 cases of Gatorade have been taken off shelves due to the mislabelling error, with PepsiCo notifying the FDA to initiate the Class II recall.
As per the health officials, a Class II implies ‘a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote’.
