Health update after more than 54,000lbs of rice recalled across 13 states

Rice is a staple in many kitchens, appearing alongside everything from curries and stir-fries to grilled meats and vegetables.

Shoppers are being warned that they might find something extra in their rice though, amid a major recall due to contamination fears.

It's the latest recall to be announced in the US, following issues with blueberries, mixed berries and alfalfa sprouts.

However, unlike these latest recalls, it is not due to fears of e.coli or salmonella or other food poisoning.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a large recall, involving Lundberg Family Farms 2-pound Regenerative Organic Certified Jasmine White Rice, with more than 54,000lbs of the rice being recalled.

The concern relates to the possibility of foreign materials being found in the rice.

According to the recall information, this could include unexpected materials such as stones, wood, metal or plastic.

It involves 32-ounce bags of rice, which were distributed across 13 US states, including California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Louisiana, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

The jasmine rice was sold through major retailers including Wegmans, Target, Walmart, Whole Foods, Giant and Hy-Vee.

The FDA has classified the recall as Class II, which means the product could cause 'temporary or medically reversible health consequences', while the chance of 'serious adverse health effects' is considered to be unlikely.

It's important to note that there have also been no reported illnesses linked to the recalled rice.

For consumers, that means the biggest potential concern is physical injury rather than food poisoning.

Foreign objects in food can potentially cause choking, damage to teeth or injury if swallowed.

Not every packet of Lundberg rice is affected, and consumers are being urged to check their cupboards for Lundberg Family Farms White Jasmine Rice, carrying the UPC number 073416040281.

The recalled products have either the lot code 260201MA and a best-before date of February 1, 2027, or lot code 260202MA with a best-before date of February 2, 2027.

The recall involves 27,324 individual packages, according to the FDA information reported by Delish.

If you discover one of the affected bags at home, the advice is straightforward: don't eat it.

You can either dispose of the product or return it to where it was purchased.

The good news is that the affected rice is not expected to be widely available on supermarket shelves.

Lundberg Family Farms has said the issue was limited to a single production run and that the affected products had been removed from stores several months ago.

The recall was initially announced in April, when Wegmans removed the product from sale over concerns about possible foreign material.

The latest FDA update has provided additional information about the scale of the recall and the states involved, hence the importance to check the exact product name, UPC, lot code and best-before date.

For anyone who has already eaten the recalled rice without experiencing any problems, they are advised to dispose of any remaining product.
