Warning: Contains spoilers for Euphoria season three finale
Euphoria’s third season – supposedly the last ever – has come to a dramatic end, taking the lives of several characters with it.
Things don’t look much better for some of those that remain, either, with Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) and Maddy (Alexa Demie) facing a particularly bleak future after the death of Nate (Jacob Elordi).
The previous episode saw him locked in a coffin and buried underground in a construction site after struggling to pay off a debt to a loan shark (Jack Topalian). By the time Cassie and Maddy got to him, he’d already died after being bitten by a rattlesnake.

The season finale shows his shellshocked wife Cassie eating a plate of French toast at a diner, with Maddy sitting opposite in tears.

“What do I do?” Maddy asks, as Cassie drowns her plate in maple syrup.
Cassie then moves around to the other side of the booth to sit next to Maddy, lying her head on her shoulder as she tells her: “We’ll figure it out together.”
But the poignant moment was overshadowed slightly by another detail from the scene: the French toast.

“Cassie poured mad syrup on her food,” one person wrote on X.
“Thought i was tripping that pour was never ending,” another echoed.
A third added: “Now Cassie yk damn well you ain’t need all that damn syrup.”
But rather than merely being a bizarre continuity error, or Sydney Sweeney not knowing how to eat French toast, it’s a very intentional move from director Sam Levinson.
Defending the character’s actions, one fan explained: “She lives on yall minds rent free lol even after everything yall waiting at the door just be saying shit about any of her actions. She’s a grieving widow for f**k’s sake.”

Is it shock? Is she simply leaning in to the most reachable form of comfort as the grief sinks in? Or is it a metaphor for the excess and addiction that has led to the demise of so many close to her?
Either way, it’s a moment that has struck a chord with many viewers.
“The diner scene with Cass and Maddy was actually really sweet I’m so upset they legit only have each other now,” one lamented.
Another said: “Can’t lie I almost cried at the diner scene with Cassie and Maddy cause that’s sisterhood fr and all of the callbacks to season 1…….”
