If you’ve been looking for a new, healthy breakfast staple, then the drink that actress Reese Witherspoon consumes every morning may be right up your street.
The Morning Show favourite, who turned 50 on 22 March, credits fellow industry veteran Kerry Washington, 49, for putting her onto a green smoothie that apparently makes her hair and nails ‘really strong’.
According to a 2020 demonstration on Instagram (which has since been reposted by 'hipandhealthy'), Witherspoon and Washington were once sitting next to each other at an awards show, and the mother-of-three used the opportunity to comment on her peer’s clear complexion.
She explained: “I didn't really know her. And I said to her: 'Your skin is so beautiful, what do you do?' And she said: 'I think it's from this drink that I drink. It's really changed my skin, and it makes my hair and nails really strong.”

"So I was in. Thank you, Kerry, for sharing the recipe!"
The ‘secret’ smoothie, which Witherspoon has previously posted on her own Instagram account, contains a plethora of vegetables, including two whole heads of romaine lettuce, as well as apples, pears, and a single lemon. What's more, the extra good news is that the Legally Blonde star’s smoothie recipe is nutritionist-approved.

Reese Witherspoon smoothie recipe
- Two heads of romaine lettuce
- 15 grams of spinach
- 120-125ml of coconut water
- One whole banana
- One whole apple
- One whole pear
- One whole lemon
- Celery (optional)
- Almond butter (optional)
Speaking to Hello! Magazine, Hannah Alderson, a British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine-registered nutritionist, said: "It's a simple way to increase colourful fibre, hydration, and micronutrient intake first thing in the morning, which can support gut health, energy, and skin.
"Because it uses whole fruits and leafy greens, it helps feed beneficial gut bacteria and keep you feeling fuller for longer, and it is not a juice, it's a smoothie."

If you want to level up Witherspoon’s breakfast drink, then the expert advised mixing in some extra fat and protein.
She reasoned that by spooning in collagen powder and flaxseeds, opting for a healthy dose of chia seeds and protein powder, or pairing it with almond butter and a hard-boiled egg, it would become a more well-rounded meal.
Alderson claimed: “This would elevate it as a morning smoothie when adapted with a source of protein or healthy fats, and it may need adjusting for anyone prone to bloating”.
In a previous interview with Marie Claire Australia, Witherspoon said she didn’t always have good eating habits and that she ‘didn't understand health or nutrition’ when she was younger.
She said: “I went completely off the rails. I was lucky enough to have people come into my life and say, 'Look, you're not going to be able to sustain energy for 12, 14, 15-hour days if you don't start eating right and exercising'.”
