Urgent warning as 12,000lbs of bacon is recalled across the US

Customers who have purchased packs of smoked bacon across the United States have been warned by officials to ditch the Canadian import.

A Class I recall, the most serious type of product safety recall, has been enacted against Maple Leaf Foods, Inc., a major Canadian food company headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario.

The FDA outlined in a notice that a class I recall is only put into place when a situation arises in which there is a ‘reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death’.

The Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has culled more than 12,000 pounds of uncooked smoked bacon that the business, famed for becoming the globe’s first major carbon-neutral food company, distributed across the United States.

The FSIS stated that the meat product did not undergo ‘import reinspection into the United States,’ and that the issue was detected during ‘routine FSIS inspection activities’ in a report dated 24 July.

It’s understood that no injuries or illnesses have been reported as efforts are in place to remove 2,036 pounds of Maple Leaf Foods, Inc. smoked bacon from Grocery Outlet shelves.

The recalls are impacting distributors and retailers in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.

When contacted for comment, Maple Leaf Foods, Inc. told FOODbible that whle the Class I recall was 'accurate', the issue was simply due to a lack of 'of paperwork review at the border when the product was shipped.'

The company said the 'product itself will not cause human illness'.

The FSIS have detailed that various products with a range of sell-by dates are included in the Class I recall.

• 12oz Royale Natural Applewood Smoked ALL NATURAL Uncured Bacon Product of Canada, with sell by dates of 1 and 7 September 2026.
• 12oz TOP VALU Uncured Hardwood Smoked Bacon Product of Canada, with sell by dates 1, 2, 4, 5, and 7 September.

No injuries or illnesses have been reported (FSIS)

The recalled items were produced on 9, 10, 12, 13, and 15 June, as per USA Today.

Moreover, the products subject to recall bear the Canadian establishment number ‘EST. 1’ printed on the side of the package and health certificate ‘2026-S732971612’ on master case boxes, the notice said.

Customers are advised not to eat the recalled red meat and to either dispose of it or return it to the point of purchase for a refund.

The Canadian bacon recall comes at the same time as a huge egg recall for possible Salmonella risk, and while US citizens continue to navigate the cyclospora outbreak, with fast-food institutions such as Taco Bell being forced to pull salad items.

The business is currently offering its Mexican Pizza for $1, sans lettuce.

But don’t worry - it comes with all the other regular ingredients, including beef, beans, Mexican pizza sauce, cheese and diced tomatoes.

The promotion is also limited to one Mexican Pizza per order
