McDonald's Snack Wrap finally returns but US fans are disappointed by one major change

The US has been waiting for almost a decade, but the day has finally come.

Fans have longed for the moment, and at last: the Snack Wrap is back on the menu at McDonald’s.

"From countless social media posts to full-fledged petitions, they never gave up on their favorite menu item. They’re the ones who inspired us to make its return to the menu happen," said McDonald's in a statement about the much-anticipated return.

The Snack Wrap is a soft flour tortilla wrapped around some McCrispy Strips, shredded lettuce, and shredded cheese, and customers have a choice of two different sauce options.

One is Spicy, featuring some habanero heat that fans will recognise from the Spicy McCrispy, and the other is Ranch with a touch of garlic and onion.

Despite the fanfare and excitement, the returning US Snack Wraps haven’t quite met everyone’s expectations. It’s all down to one key change; the old ones used Chicken Selects, which some believe to be of higher quality than the McCrispy Strips.

“We all know by now McCrispy Strips taste like octopus elbows,” said one X user. “Now they are using them for the relaunch of the snack wrap. Epic fail @McDonalds.”

“Glad the Snack Wrap is back, but if we’re being honest it’s not a truly a Snack Wrap without the Chicken Selects @McDonalds,” bemoaned another.

“This is hardly a Snack Wrap with the absence of the Chicken Selects,” said another X user. “The new ‘McCrispy’ chicken is not crispy and is awful and rubbery.”

It’s a very common sentiment, with another adding: “The nostalgic urge to try the Snack Wrap knowing it’s not Chicken Selects so it’s lower quality.”

“Y’all, the chicken Snack Wrap is so bad, why did they have to get rid of the Chicken Selects?” asked another.

It’s an out and out deal-breaker for some: “Y'all can keep the Snack Wrap if you not gonna give us the Chicken Selects with it @McDonalds. Nobody wants this new ‘chicken’.”

“By the way, they still have them in the UK,” noted another user. They’re remained available in Canada too, for the record. “They never stopped. The UK also has the OG Chicken Selects for the Snack Wrap. The USA has McCrispy chicken strips. They are not the same and will taste terrible. Keep boycotting.”

It’s a shame to see so many fans disappointed with the long-awaited return. It’s easy to romanticise things we loved back in the day, but switching to a lower-quality chicken option does sound like it’s set up old Snack Wrap fans for disappointment.
