McDonald's Monopoly finally returns to US after almost 10 years with prizes worth $471 million

The ever popular McDonald's Monopoly is back after nine years, and this time it's gone digital

It's been a while since the US was able to get in on the McDonald's Monopoly action - something that's become a staple in the annual calendar of many countries including the UK.

It's been nine whole years, to be precise, as the last time Americans could play was way back in 2016.

However, it's finally coming back... and this time there's a twist.

The Monopoly game itself is still simple, to be in with a chance to win, you need to buy eligible menu items, which range from everything from drinks to meal deals.

A prize can be as little as a free Snack Wrap to scooping a $1 million cash prize, and just think of the food you could buy with that.

The fast food giant announced the game’s comeback on Monday 29 September, and luckily fans don't have long to wait as it all kicks off on Monday 6 October.

Now that the game is finally back after nearly a decade, things have upgraded a little - and by that we mean it's gone digital. So to be eligible to play, reward members must register for the game on the McDonald's app before it kicks off in October.

Once the game is underway, customers just need to order qualifying items, like Filet-O-Fish sandwiches, McMuffins and 10-piece Chicken McNuggets to try and win prizes. The food will either come with a physical or digital Game Piece, which is a label that you 'peel' to reveal your prize and see what you've won.

There are two types of wins, which are an Instant Win Prize or a Collect to Win Property Piece.

Instant Wins are typically 'lower' ticket prizes, so usually things like free food or rewards points, and there are loads of these to win. In fact, you'd likely get a few of these if you're playing, as there's going to be 122 million Instant Win Food Prizes when the game kicks off next month. There's also more than 6 million Rewards Points Prizes on offer too.

Property Pieces are an interesting one to get, and see McDonald's teaming up with 'partners' to offer cool prizes, ranging from a free month of a Peacock Premium subscription to huge wins like a trip for four to Universal Orlando Resort.

After redeeming a Game Piece, fans will get another chance to win via the bonus game in the McDonald’s app to win rarer prizes. For example, there are 30,000 $20 Uber Eats gift cards, 10 prizes for a paid trip to the FIFA World Cup in 2026, five 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokees and one $1 million cash prize available as Bonus Play Prizes.

This year's McDonald's Monopoly is a huge one, with the approximate retail value of all the prizes available coming in at a whopping $471,935,862.34. A full list of prizes, rules and instructions about claiming prizes can be found online.
