The fastest man in Britain has revealed the impressive diet that helps to keep him in peak athletic shape.

Team GB sprinter Zharnel Hughes is the current British record holder in 100m and 200m sprint, a title which comes with a gruelling training regimen and a high energy diet to fuel it.

This weekend will see the sprinter go for glory once again when he competes in the 100m at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

Unsurprisingly, being Britain's fastest man requires a lot of energy, and Zharnel has now opened up about what he eats in a day.

Beginning in the morning, he wakes up to the breakfast of champions, but what is it?

Speaking to Mens Health, Zharnel revealed that for breakfast he'll often turn to the delicious food of where he lives in Jamaica.

"Because I live in Jamaica, I will have the national dish, which is ackee and saltfish," he said.

If ackee and saltfish isn't available, the athlete said he might opt for a protein and fruit rich breakfast instead.

"On another day, I may have three boiled eggs, a banana and plenty of other fruits as well," he said.

Of course no breakfast is complete without something to wash it down, but rather than tea or coffee, Zharnel said he'll instead go for a glass of orange juice or coconut water.

Coconut water is naturally isotonic to human blood, meaning it has similar concentrations of sugars dissolved in it, so is good for hydration.

Lunch sees a lot of carbs to bring that energy needed for sprinting, with pasta being a staple.

He said: "It could be chicken pasta with alfredo sauce, with a little bit of cheese, not too much because you don't want to be bloated going into training."

As for dinner, he might go for Jamaican classic rice and jerk chicken around once a week, but normally has a potato salad with lots of veggies.

The sprinter also loves salmon, saying he likes it in the oven with a little butter melted on top.

"I will have this with roast potatoes, some string beans and carrots - I love roast potatoes!" he said.

And of course there are treats and cheats.

Zharnel revealed that he will indulge in a bit of chocolate cake around once a month.

As for his go-to cheat food?

"Pizza," he said. "I love a slice or two of my favourite pizza with bell peppers, pineapple, pepperoni, and sometimes I may throw a bit of barbecue chicken on there as well."
