Sainsbury’s shoppers have been left scratching their heads after the supermarket debuted a controversial dessert in the form of milk chocolate pasta.
When it comes to sweet treats, it’s usually M&S on top, with the chain recently reintroducing its viral gingerbread and white chocolate cookies, sharing delectable Dubai-style chocolate sandwiches, and launching bargain mystery bakery bags.
But it’s Sainsbury’s taking the cake this September. The brand has just shared a pudding-themed carb packet, and you’re either going to love it or loathe it.
Sainsbury’s chocolate pasta on sale
The brand has made headlines by releasing a box of fresh pasta made with free-range eggs, wheat flour, and a touch of semolina.
However, it’s not a savoury dish—it’s filled with an indulgent milk chocolate and creamy mascarpone filling.

The indulgent delight serves two people, with a single portion weighing in at 368 calories.

Fans, including actor Michael Barrymore, have weighed in on the jaw-dropping product. The Celebrity Big Brother star claimed they initially looked ‘disgusting’ and ‘weird’ while on the boil.
Barrymore topped his with a spoonful of M&S Custard Cream spread before digging in.
“It’s like chocolate pudding… It’s not bad,” he added.
Others aren’t as convinced, with one Instagram user typing: “Hmm I’m still processing this.”
“It's a ‘no’ from me. I'd be thinking it needs parmesan. Don't even try that,” someone else replied.
The Sun reported that a Reddit user commented: “The texture of pasta with the taste of chocolate? That feels so wrong I can’t imagine that working.”
Some Sainsbury’s fans have defended the brand, with one writing: “Sweet filled pasta is a real thing from Italy that, in certain regions, goes back a long time. It’s not just Sainsbury’s being weird.”

A second said on Instagram: “This is what the people from the 80s waited for when they said innovation is coming soon.”
“I’m thinking, add milk and voila its breakfast hahaha,” a third reported.
“Ok SO I feel like this is the second sign from the universe to try it. I ordered nduja & hot honey pasta from Sainsbury’s and they substituted it for this,” another said.
Sainsbury’s releases Apple Crumble sandwich
This isn’t the first time this month that Sainsbury’s has caused controversy with its innovative offerings.
Earlier this month, the supermarket chain detailed its latest festive creation: its new apple crumble sandwich.
The festive munch, which launches in November, contains fresh apple slices, fruit compote, crème fraîche and crumbled biscuits, all encased between two thick slices of brioche.

Shoppers will be able to pick it up as a snack choice within the Sainsbury’s meal deal range, rather than as a main sandwich option.
The Observer’s food reviewer, Holly O’Neill, wasn’t sure: “I’m pro-fusion – and fun ideas – but sandwich and pudding is a combination I probably won’t rush to have again."
More Sainsbury’s 2026 Christmas items
Sainsbury’s recently detailed more items in its Christmas 2026 range, including jaffa cake-flavoured rum, lobster and black prawn cocktails, and no turkey roasts with vegan bacon and herby stuffing.

Shoppers across the country will be able to pick up showstoppers like the free-range bronze turkey crown, Taste the Difference Discovery salmon en croute, and sticky fig-glazed gammon joint.
In terms of desserts, expect to find double-chocolate mince pies, Roasted pistachio cheesecakes and chocolate ganache tortes as well as sherry trifles, sticky toffee puddings, rich limoncello tiramisu, and 18-month-matured Christmas puddings.
There’s also a four-tier cheese tower weighing 1.7kg to pre-order, made up of Barber's Farmhouse Mature Cheddar, Long Clawson Shropshire Blue, TTD Camembert Pays and Wensleydale & Cranberry.
