1000-lb Sisters star Tammy Slaton defended as she apologises for drinking soda

Everything in moderation.

You may have come across a reality show called 1000-lb Sisters which began airing in 2020. It follows the lives of the Slaton sisters, Tammy and Amy, as they battle to cut their weight down to healthy levels.

With seven seasons comprising 65 episodes and counting, the show has documented their various lifestyle changes and surgeries to cut down on their body fat and ultimately seek to live less encumbered lives.

Their combined starting weight crossed 1,000 lbs, or 453kg, with Amy weighing 406 lbs (184kg) and Tammy weighing 608 lbs (275kg).

While their journey continues, with plenty of self-documented coverage on social media, a fan noted that Tammy was seen drinking a soda that may have contravened her diet plan via their high sugar content.

Since the show began, 39-year-old Tammy has lost around half her starting weight through lifestyle changes and bariatric surgery that alters the digestive system to aid with reducing food intake. She underwent the procedure in 2022.

During the premiere of the latest season of 1000-lb Sisters, Tammy revealed she was ‘down 500 pounds’ from her peak weight. “When I was at my heaviest, I was 700-plus pounds. Right now, I’m weighing in at 238,” she said.

In response to the fan’s comment, Tammy released a TikTok video defending herself.

“What are you drinking?” asked the comment. “I thought soda or soft drinks are full of sugar?

“Everybody is different. I’m not supposed to drink the sodies as much, and that was Sprite,” said Tammy in the TikTok video response. “Well, sorry. So…”

“They’ll always find something to talk about,” said someone off-camera.

“You’re right, you’re right,” agreed Tammy.

She continued: “In moderation, you can drink or eat whatever you want. I drink a lot of water and a lot of sodies [soda], but I’m still three, four years post-op so everything I’m doing is not fine, but it’s okay. I’m still continuing on my diet, I’m still continuing to lose weight, and I’m still hitting goals. So thank you for your comment.”

Fans leapt to Tammy’s defence in the comments, too.

“You can drink as many sodies as you want,” said the top comment.

“Tammy, YOU HAVE DONE THIS ALL YOURSELF!” said another. “Politely, people need to mind their dang business and let you keep being amazing.”

“Everyone can chill out,” added another. “She is doing amazing and has lost a ton of weight. Let her life and drink herself a sodi pop.”

In the debut season, the sisters were asked about their soda intake. Tammy said at the time she was drinking up to 12 cans of soda each day. By 2023, she said she had significantly reduced her soda consumption.

Along with the bariatric surgery, Tammy went under the knife again for skin removal surgery in 2025 that took off over 15 pounds of excess skin from her chin, arms, and lower stomach.
