Annie Murphy’s ‘unhinged’ mac and cheese recipe divides fans

Fans of Annie Murphy aren’t sure what to think after the Schitt’s Creek favourite revealed the three unusual ingredients she uses to bulk out her not-so-classic mac and cheese recipe.

The 39-year-old, best known for playing spoiled socialite Alexis Rose between 2015 and 2020, is currently in the midst of promoting her latest project, All That She Wants.

During an appearance at the Toronto International Film Festival, Murphy was asked by Buzzfeed Canada to explain exactly how she likes to make her bowl of warm, comforting pasta.

As a base, the actress likes to pick up a box of Annie’s Classic Cheddar Macaroni & Cheese, which is made with organic pasta and is free from artificial flavours, synthetic colours, and preservatives.

When it comes to boiling and draining, she apparently follows the directions on the back of the General Mills product to a T before pouring in the cheese packet and adding a dash of milk.

Instead of butter, Murphy apparently likes to spoon in tzatziki, a creamy, salted yoghurt and cucumber dip.

“And on top of that, you dice up some hot dogs. You dice up some pickles. And there you have the perfect, mallable dish of sloppy, sloppy mac and cheese,” she added in the now-viral video.

Murphy’s jaw-dropping mac and cheese recipe was shared via Buzzfeed Canada’s Instagram profile last week na dhas already drawn hundreds of comments from fans.

Some are willing to trust the American’s ‘unhinged’ recipe, with one typing: “Hot dogs and tzatziki is wild, but I trust her. I’m gonna do it.”

“Knew of the hot dog trick, but adding tzatziki sounds A++,” someone else remarked.

A third said: “Call me white trash but my mom's way and I love her for this. Was always cut up a hotdog, throw it in with the noodles to boil.

“And then substitute the butter for cheese Wiz. YOU would think it would taste like cheese Wiz but no it just tastes cheese and creamier.”

A fifth said: “This is so unhinged, I love it.”

Others aren’t as convinced, with some other social media user reporting: “Was open to hearing this, but absolutely f***ing not. Are you kidding me? I’m also shocked to my core.”

“As a Greek, I'm deeply offended in multiple ways,” a second said.

Another added: “The way I got excited and then got grossed out.”

This isn’t the first time that Murphy has broken the internet with her mac and cheese recipe.

Back in 2023, the Ottawa native told US Weekly that her go-to comfort food was mac and cheese with hot dogs.

However, she claimed she used herb-and-garlic cream cheese in place of butter.

The Barefoot Contessa’s version of mac and cheese features Gruyère, extra sharp cheddar, and half a teaspoon of nutmeg, as well as milk, unsalted butter, flour, and black pepper.

After the dish is assembled in a 3-quart baking dish, Ina Garten tops it with sliced tomatoes and fresh white bread crumbs.
