McDonald's is trialling a huge new change to restaurants

This could be huge for customers

McDonald's will trial a big change to the way its restaurants work in the UK.

The fast food giant is known for being able to provide a very, well, fast service when it comes to rustling up something to eat.

It's not haute cuisine, sure, but if you walk into a McDonald's you can be sure that you'll get something quick and tasty.

While the regular system sees customers ordering and then waiting patiently for their number to come up on the big screen, the new idea aims to cut customers' waiting time in the restaurant even more.

In order to take advantage of it, you will need to download the McDonald's app.

But how does it work?

At the moment you have to actually be in the restaurant to place your order, unless you're ordering takeaway of course, but that's different.

Under the new system though, if you're in a particular rush - for example, you have half an hour to grab something on lunch - then you don't have to actually be in the restaurant.

That's because you use the new feature to place your order before you arrive.

In theory, it will then use your location to track how close you are to the restaurant.

Then, when you are three minutes' away, it will notify the staff and they will start preparing your order.

If all goes smoothly, you can then walk into the restaurant and collect your order immediately, without the anxious, hangry staring at the big screen.

The new system is being trialled at 176 restaurants in the UK, with McDonald's having 1,477 there in total.

In order for it to work you will need to download the McDonald's app and have your location services turned on for it.
