People are only just realising A-lister who voices the yellow M&M

M&M’s adverts have featured the same familiar group of colourful characters for decades, but many people have apparently never stopped to consider who is actually behind their voices.

The yellow M&M is one of the brand’s most recognisable mascots, usually appearing alongside the sharper, more cynical red character in commercials seen around the world.

Although the voice may sound familiar, its owner is better known for major film and television roles than advertising chocolate.

That detail resurfaced after the actor spoke about landing the job more than 30 years ago, prompting a wave of surprised reactions from people who had heard him countless times without making the connection.

For some viewers, learning the truth has completely changed how those familiar adverts now sound.

The A-lister behind the yellow M&M is J.K. Simmons, the Academy Award-winning actor known for Whiplash, the Spider-Man movies, Juno, and Invincible.

Simmons, 71, has voiced the character since 1996, when he took over the role from John Goodman.

Speaking to TODAY (reported by People), he described the audition process as ‘ridiculous’, explaining that he originally believed he would be reading for a different character.

He said: “We had this long discussion ... I was like, ‘So I’m going to read for Red M&M and [casting director] Janet Eisenberg, she was like, ‘Oh no no no, J, I think you’re more of a Yellow M&M."

“We really went back and forth like we were talking about am I going to play Mitch or Stanley in Streetcar [Named Desire].”

Simmons eventually trusted Eisenberg’s judgement, saying: “And finally I went, ‘Okay, yeah, whatever you think.’”

The decision turned into one of the longest-running roles of his career.

“Then now, 30 years later, thank you, Janet Eisenberg,” he added.

Despite Simmons having played Yellow for three decades, the revelation has caught plenty of people on social media off guard.

Responding to a post about his audition, one X (formerly Twitter) user wrote: “This is how I find out JK Simmons voices the Yellow M&M”

Another said: “I am today years old finding out JK Simmons is the f*****g yellow M&M.”

A third was even more direct, writing: “WHAT THE F**K DO YOU MEAN JK SIMMONS IS AN M&M”

Facebook users responding to a FOODbible post on the matter had much the same reaction, with one person commenting: “I had no idea!!!”

Another praised the breadth of Simmons’ career, writing: “This guy is in everything, movies, shows; they don't give him enough credit. He should get paid more”.

The role may be unexpected, but Simmons appears happy with how things worked out.

He recently called playing Yellow M&M 'the sweetest job' and made his preference for which of the chocolate candies are the best perfectly obvious.

He said: “The yellow peanut M&Ms are by far the superior M&M.”
