Double cheeseburgers from McDonald’s were allegedly on the White House menu when the US Men’s Winter Olympic Ice Hockey team rolled in from Italy - and the internet has a lot to say on the matter.

Last week (22 February), 24-year-old Jack Hughes sealed the deal for the US men’s side to win its first Olympic gold medal in almost five decades to clench a 2-1 victory over rivals Canada.

Following the conclusion of the Milano-Cortina Games, 20 of the 25 players headed to Washington D.C. to take part in US President Donald Trump’s State Of The Union address.

“Our country is winning again,” the 79-year-old Republican stated at the event.

“In fact, we’re winning so much that we really don’t know what to do about it. People are asking me — ‘Please, please, please, Mr. President, we’re winning too much. We can’t take it anymore. We’re not used to winning in our country. Until you came along, we’re just always losing, but now, we’re winning too much’.

“To prove that point, here with us tonight is a group of winners who just made the entire nation proud: the men’s gold medal Olympic hockey team,” he added.

After his speech, Trump apparently fed the squad McDonald’s double cheeseburgers, as per conservative influencer Nick Sortor.

Scarlett Johnson, a mother-of-five and self-described ‘proud Hispanic conservative’, shared a video via social media of the Olympians digging into the fast food.

“Brought to you courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue,” she added.

Social media users have come out in their droves to debate the honorary meal, with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt typing: “President Donald Trump knows how to celebrate champions — bringing McDonald's to the White House for Team USA was pure American fun. No one does it like him!”

However, not everyone is impressed with McDonald’s being served to the medallists, with an X user writing: “You're right, no one would even think of serving top notch athletes, who eat the best food possible, because it's their fuel for their training and their competition, the worst junk food you could find. Only a classless fool would even think of doing that. That crap is for kids.”

“Part of the ‘Make America Healthy Again’ campaign,” joked a second.

A third reported: “It’s Americana. Some things democrats do not understand. A vegetarian quiche would not have been the same.”

Someone else commented: “I bet they loved the meal . Don’t think they would have wanted to sit down to a five star meal. Kinda cool McDonald’s.”

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time that Trump has served up McDonald’s to athletes at the White House.

In 2019, Trump ordered in the fast-food when the Clemson Tigers football team won the 2019 NCAA Division I FBS football season.

Additionally, the father-of-five is a McDonald’s fan himself, having previously handed out meals during his successful 2024 Presidental campaign.

There’s also a viral snap of him chowing down on takeout with Elon Musk, Donald Trump Jr., House Speaker Mike Johnson, and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert. F Kennedy Jr. onboard Air Force One.

“I love McDonald’s,” he said in the past, as per Time.

According to a book written by two of his former campaign aides, the President’s order consists of: Big Macs, two Filet-o-Fish sandwiches, and a large malted chocolate shake.
