20-year-old Walmart receipt is 'perfect example of inflation' as it leaves people seriously shocked

Grocery prices have risen exponentially over the past two decades, with a recently uncovered Walmart receipt proving how cheap things used to be in the early 2000s.

Late last year, the US Bureau of Labour Statistics announced that the average American household spent around $831 per month on food, which works out to about $9,970 per year.

Worryingly, some households are actually spending almost 60 percent of their income on groceries, as per the USDA’s Economic Research Service.

But it wasn’t always that way; a receipt fresh from 2006 has shown how much US citizens were actually forking out for their food shop once upon a time.

On 19 May, X user Kylei, who goes by the moniker @ruledbymercuryy, shared a snapshot of her mother’s Walmart order from two decades ago.

The 79-item list, which cost £161.87 in total, was accompanied with the caption: “Found my mom’s grocery receipt from 2006, and I just fell to my knees.”

The now-viral post has garnered more than 12.4 million views and attracted comments from shoppers who have been comparing the 2006 Walmart prices to how much products would cost you in 2026.

"This 2006 Walmart receipt is the perfect example of inflation. 79 items cost $161.87 back then… today that same cart would easily be $350+ at Walmart," claimed one shopper.

"Eggs were $1.28 now $4-$6. Coke 2 liters were $1.18 now almost $3. "Chicken wings were $8.94 now $16-$20. Lunch meat was under $3 now $7-$9.

"Potatoes were $3.96 now $8-$10. Shrimp was $2.28 now $7-$10 lb.

"Salmon was $1.64 now $5-$8 lb. Groceries really used to stretch further, big boy INFLATION."

A second X user echoed: “$161 for 79 items and there’s salmon, shrimp, wings, cereal, soda, produce, snacks AND meat on there this receipt feels more like evidence from a lost civilisation.”

“I stopped after the first couple of lines. Under $2 for a box of cereal and $2 for a bag of chips. We used to be a proper country!,” a third added.

Over on Reddit, someone else said that the ‘biggest change in price’ was paper towels from the brand Bounty, which now cost $5.94.

According to the receipt, 20 years ago the towels cost just $1.96, making for a 203.1 percent increase.

Someone else alleged that many of the products sold in-stores across the nation today have suffered what is known as ‘shrinkflation’.

The latter is used to describe an item that has been reduced in size or quantity while keeping its price stable and inline with inflation.

"One thing to consider too is a lot of these packaged products have also gotten smaller. Cereal, paper towels, etc,” they wrote.

Another remarked: “While another said: "Don’t forget how big the products were too. Toilet paper was wider, ice cream was larger, laundry soap... etc."
