Nutella launching new flavour for first time in 61 year history

And no, the plant-based version of the original doesn’t count.

Nutella – everyone’s favourite hazelnut-chocolate spread – first launched in 1964 and has only had some slight recipe modifications since.

Over the years, we've seen a few extra products crop up on shelves, from biscuits and bars to those moreish Nutella & Go snack pots, which see the spread served up as a dip alongside pretzel sticks.

We were also given a vegan-friendly alternative, as well as a variant made with extra cocoa.

But all of those have all stayed true to Nutella's ultra-indulgent, creamy spread. In all that time, parent company Ferrero hadn’t seen fit to introduce any new flavours - something many brands end up doing to diversify their range (and, y'know, bring in some extra cash).

However, it’s now been announced that a whole new Nutella is on the way, and it sure is a curveball.

It seems it's no longer just about hazelnuts, as US customers can look forward to the introduction of Nutella Peanut, with the new flavour rolling out in spring 2026.

Ferrero said it 'combines the distinctive creaminess of Nutella cocoa hazelnut spread with the delicious taste of roasted peanuts’. Sounds pretty delicious.

The smooth, moreish texture will remain the same, but with that added nuttiness that you only catch a hint of in the original. Ferrero said it’s been developing the new flavour for five years, and it’ll be produced at its Illinois factory that’s undergoing a $75 million (£56 million) expansion.

Ferrero’s got plenty more in the works, it seems, with US customers being treated to a white chocolate Crunch bar, Marshmallow Butterfingers, and Dr Pepper Tic Tacs sometimes next year, too.

It’s unclear whether Nutella Peanut will become a permanent fixture, or whether it will officially venture to other countries and markets – we’re sure imports will be on the menu at some shops – but if it proves a success in the States then surely the sky’s the limit.

Seth Gonzalez, senior director of marketing at Nutella, spoke to the Chicago Tribune about plans to make the Nutella lineup addition permanent: “It’s definitely something we’d like to have on the radar. Of course, we need the success of this product first to build a platform off of it.”

It’s going to have to be pretty special to dislodge the likes of Reese’s Peanut Butter as the peanutty go-to toast spread, but it’s hard to imagine a version of Nutella that doesn’t absolutely slap.

Of course, toast isn't the only way you can use Nutella. There are some great recipes out there for cakes, biscuits, and all manner of sweet treats that use the delicious chocolatey spread - which would, no doubt, be as tasty with the peanut version - or you can follow in the footsteps of this writer who loves to eat it directly from the jar with a spoon.

Admittedly, that's probably not Ferrero's intended use of the spread, but who can resist a sneaky spoonful of the good stuff?
