Whitbread officially retired five of its legendary hospitality brands last month, but now they’re back in action, having been saved by two companies.
Every single Beefeater, Bar + Block, Cookhouse, Brewers Fayre and Table Table closed up shop last month, with the hospitality company citing ‘significant cost increases’ as the driving force.
Prior to axing all 261 sites, Whitbread announced that it planned to convert its remaining former eateries into new hotel rooms as part of a five-year survival plan.
“Our continued efforts to drive our commercial plan and efficiencies will extend our market-leading position and allow us to take share from our competitors, many of which are struggling to grow,” chief executive Dominic Paul said in a statement.
Former food and beverage sites rescued
In a dramatic U-turn, The Express reported that Queensway Inns and Common Table Group have purchased a combined total of 110 former Whitbread-owned sites.

The former saved 53 spots, all of which will be transformed into a new line of ‘value pubs’.
It’s understood that more than 900 employees will potentially be put into new roles.
Meanwhile, the newly established hospitality firm Common Table Group said it planned to secure 57 sites previously branded as Beefeater, Brewers Fayre, and Cookhouse.
The publication wrote that the deal also includes a Premier Inn hotel in Stourbridge town centre.
The Sun said the Common Table Group sites will open as soon as possible, with the first scheduled for a mid-November launch date.
Excitingly, the snaffled sites are expected to remain restaurants that both diners and hotel guests can order food and drinks from.
More than 700 jobs will be created with the reopenings, The Express wrote.
