Holidays costing a pretty penny is nothing new, but with all the cost pressures of the post-COVID economy it’s becoming harder and harder to head abroad on a bargain.
Flights are expensive, accommodation prices are through the roof, and rocketing food prices compound the wallet stress you’ll face on your holibobs.
Brits holidaying in Benidorm – arguably the most British place in continental Europe – have even been issued a ‘red alert’ over the price of food and drink.
For one mum, the cost of eating out certainly caught her by surprise whilst holidaying in Tenerife.

During their 2024 trip, the mum was expecting a hefty bill after taking her family-of-seven out, and you won’t believe how much it came to.
Posting to TikTok, she shared how her large family had ordered steak, pizza, and drinks, with the former of that list generally commanding a high price on its own.
Brace yourself.
“Evening meal this evening cost €54.84 (around £45),” said the mum in her TikTok video.
We had you going there, didn’t we?
That’s right, somehow, in the expensive times of 2024, in the tourist hotspot that is Tenerife, a family of seven managed to eat a meal out for less than £50. At £6.42 a head, that’s an incredible bargain.
Comments under the video were full of shock at the meal’s affordability.
"That would be £150 easy in Turkey." said one.
"How? That's amazing!" asked another.
"Good price,” chimed another whilst taking a break from saying the sky is blue. “We normally pay roughly 50 to 60 euros for three people."
"Amazing value, and your kids seem very well behaved too,” added another. “That's amazing."
"Beautiful family, and food looks good,” said yet another friendly commenter. “Very reasonable."
The kids’ behaviour was getting plaudits from all over: "Love their table etiquette. Great parenting."
"That's amazing. I live in Cyprus. It would be much more than that,” said a final comment.
While bargains like this are evidently possible, holiday meal prices certainly fall across a big scale.

One holidaymaker visited Disneyland earlier this year, and the breakfast bill saw him ‘almost spit out [his] coffee.
The ‘Princess Breakfast’, so named because you’d have to be a princess to afford one, came to $937.65 (£689) including a $150 tip.
“Kids enjoyed it, so I think it was worth it,” said the mild-mannered X user in question. “The kids definitely learned some new words when I opened the bill though.”
He added: “Service was attentive and enthusiastic, princesses were all trained pro actresses and spent a lot of time with the kids. I enjoyed it.”
