In Hollywood, there are festive traditions, and then there are Tom Cruise festive traditions.
Each December, a carefully selected group of actors, film directors, and industry insiders finds a very particular delivery arriving at their door: a pristine white box containing what has quietly become one of the most talked-about baked goods in film circles. The cake itself has achieved near-mythical status, with recipients treating it less like dessert and more like a seasonal badge of honour.

Stories about Cruise’s Christmas cake tend to surface every year, usually accompanied by photos of the immaculate packaging and plenty of enthusiasm from those lucky enough to receive it.

Some stars admit to rationing slices. Others talk about freezing portions to make them last longer. It’s one of those rare celebrity rituals that feels both extravagant and oddly personal, which only adds to its intrigue.

Jake Johnson, best known for his work on screen across film and television (in roles like Nick Miller in New Girl and Peter Parker in the Spider-Man: Spider-Verse movies), is firmly part of Cruise’s professional orbit. The two worked together on 2017’s The Mummy, and by all accounts, Johnson came away with nothing but admiration for his co-star.
Naturally, when talk of the famous cake does the rounds each year, his name often comes up among the expected recipients.

But Johnson’s Christmas delivery looks a little different, and there’s a very specific reason for that.
The explanation comes directly from Johnson himself, who shared the story via social media on Instagram. Noted by Cinemablend, he wrote: “I did a movie with @tomcruise in 2017. Soon after I started getting his legendary holiday cake. A few years back I admitted to him that I had a dairy issue. It wasn't a great moment admitting to my film hero that I couldn't stomach dairy so the cake was being wasted on me.”
Rather than quietly removing Johnson from the cake list, Cruise found an alternative that still kept the festive spirit firmly intact.

Johnson continued: “The following year he sent a gingerbread house with my kids names on it. He does it every year since. We love it. It's become part of our xmas tradition and holiday decoration.”
So while Johnson doesn’t receive the famous Tom Cruise cake at Christmas anymore, he arguably gets something even more personal. The gingerbread house has become a yearly fixture in his home, complete with his children’s names and a level of detail that suggests just as much thought as the original cake.

Johnson ended his post with a note of gratitude, calling Cruise ‘the best #1 on a callsheet in the game,’ a sentiment that neatly sums up why stories like this continue to follow the actor around.
