Subway is one of the nation’s foremost sandwich emporiums.

With a hefty roster of breads and ingredients, and all the customisation options you could ever want, and plenty of drinks and snacks to wash it all down, it’s a common go-to for countless office-goers and high street shoppers.

You might think Subway has exhausted most of its options when it comes to innovating across its menu, but it turns out you’d be wrong.

Despite being one of the world’s largest fast food chains with a business model almost entirely predicated upon sandwiches, Subway is mixing things up with a unexpected twist.

It’s introducing jacket potato options.

If you’re familiar with the toppings options at Subway, you’ll already know that’s a match made in heaven. They’ll need to add a tub of baked beans to the roster for the full experience though, opening the door to psychos order baked bean sandwiches.

According to Subway, 94% of Britons claim they eat a jacket potato at least once per week. That figure seems staggeringly high, but who’s to argue with Subway?

The chain is indeed adding baked beans to the mix, with the new potato-based side of the business being dubbed ‘Spudway’ across the nation.

Tuna Mayo, Meatball Marinara, Chicken Tikka, and Cheese & Beans are just a handful of the options you’ll be able to select from the menu, with endless alternative combinations to choose from at your whim.

The move follows a successful trial conducted earlier this year, and has rolled out to every Subway across the UK and Ireland from 3 September 2025.

“The nation's love of Jacket Potatoes is unparalleled,” said Cathy Goodwin, Interim Director of Culinary & Innovation at Subway, EMEA.

“The enthusiasm we’ve seen on social media and the strong demand from our guests throughout the trial made it clear that Spudway™ deserved a permanent place on our menu.

“Made with British potatoes, Irish salted butter, a double portion of cheese, and fully customisable with any of our many toppings – from our iconic Meatball Marinara to spud staples like Cheese & Beans, Spudway™ is the perfect freshly-made, high-quality lunch choice.”

Subway highlighted in its press release that jacket potatoes’ popularity has seen a hefty uptick via social media, with the British staple finding new fans around the world.

Conversations rage about the best and most-cursed topping combinations, with 57% of respondents to a Subway survey saying tuna and beans is the worst of the lot.

Interestingly, that same survey revealed that 1 in 10 people admit to eating their jacket potatoes with ketchup, and 24% claiming they would rethink their dating choices if a prospective partner was seen eating an aberrant topping.

In good news for food waste and nutrition, 78% said eating the skin is an absolute must.

Here are the top 10 jacket potato toppings gleaned from Subway’s survey.

  • Cheese, 67%
  • Butter, 64%
  • Baked beans and cheese, 56%
  • Tuna Mayo, 36%
  • Bacon, 23%
  • Chicken, 22%
  • Chicken Tikka, 19%
  • Ham, 16%
  • Mayo, 15%
  • Taco Beef, 15%

Over on TikTok, early adopters have been dishing out rave reviews for the new spud options.

“Looove jacket potatoes especially crispy skin,” said one TikTok comment.

“Cheese and tuna is such a delicious combo always,” opined another.

Another shared: “OMG yum I want to try.”

Not everyone is convinced, of course: “I got one yesterday absolutely awful.”

You can’t win ‘em all.
