There are few things that can make a Friday even better, but a free cheeseburger might.
This week, McDonald’s is giving customers exactly that, with Double Cheeseburgers being handed out for National Cheeseburger Day on September 18.
There is, naturally, a small catch: customers will need to spend at least $1 first, and it’s also only available in the US.
The offer is available at participating McDonald’s restaurants through the chain’s app and is reserved for members of MyMcDonald’s Rewards.

Customers can claim one Double Cheeseburger each, and the $1 minimum purchase can be spent on a drink, snack or another menu item before the burger is added to the order.
McDonald’s appears to be leaning into the occasion rather than pretending National Cheeseburger Day is a particularly serious national holiday.

“Since burgers are kind of our thing,” the chain said, encouraging customers to add a Double Cheeseburger to whatever else they are ordering.
“We’d love for fans to come in and grab their favorite McDonald’s drink, snack or meal and add a Double Cheeseburger to celebrate the holiday with us!”
You can’t really argue with that logic.
The Double Cheeseburger is one of McDonald’s more dependable menu choices: two beef patties, cheese and the familiar combination of pickles, onions, ketchup and mustard.
Unfortunately for hungry customers on this side of the Atlantic, there is no equivalent giveaway being announced for the UK.
Yes, America gets a free Double Cheeseburger, while Britain gets to read about America getting a free Double Cheeseburger. It is perhaps the most McDonald’s version of the special relationship imaginable.
The giveaway is not the only limited-time attraction McDonald’s has planned for September. The chain is also launching a SpongeBob x One Piece Happy Meal at participating US restaurants from September 15, featuring 15 collectible toys combining characters from the two animated franchises.

Among the mash-ups are SpongeBob as One Piece’s Luffy, Patrick as Zoro and Sandy as Nami, giving fans of both shows another reason to make a trip to the golden arches.
“For the first time ever, two of the most iconic franchises of the ocean are coming together for one treasure-filled adventure,” the chain said.
“After all, what happens when a fry cook with big dreams crosses paths with a young captain determined to become King of the Pirates? Obviously, an unforgettable voyage packed with friendship, adventure and imagination.”
McDonald’s has also brought back its Spicy Chicken McNuggets for a limited time, alongside the Mighty Hot Sauce.
The nuggets have appeared intermittently since their introduction in 2020 and have developed enough of a following to return periodically.
The deal is only valid once per person and only at participating locations, so customers will want to check the McDonald’s app before heading out.
For everyone in Britain, you can admire the deal from afar and pretend we were never that hungry anyway.
National Cheeseburger Day may be international in spirit, but apparently the free cheese is staying firmly on the American side of the pond.
In England, you can also console yourself by trying the new Black Pepper and Garlic McNuggets, Blamco Cheesy Potato Bites, or a Candy Crush McFlurry.
