Some might see them as a sacred addition to the Christmas dinner. For others, it's a must-have alongside any Sunday roast. But one thing can be agreed upon by all meat-eating Brits: pigs in blankets are delicious, and the highlight of any plate.
However, for our neighbours across the pond, thoughts of a pig in blanket won't elicit mouth-watering dreams of a bite of bacon-wrapped sausage - and when Brits discovered what pigs in blankets are in the States, they were horrified.

As we know, in the UK, pigs in blankets are chipolatas or sausages wrapped in delicious bacon, roasted in the oven until they achieve the perfect state of crispy but also juicy. They're a hot, salty bite of heaven.
However, in the US, they're something else entirely. Known as 'pigs in a blanket', the Americans lose the bacon and instead wrap their sausage in pastry - and to make matters worse, they often use a hotdog-style sausage and sweeter croissant dough. Finally, something the Brits and the French can agree on - this sounds like an abomination.
“American pigs in blankets really haunt me, why would you swap out the crucial element?" asked one horrified person on Twitter, now known as X.
“Learning that American pigs in blankets are a totally different thing to ours has changed my worldview," another said.

Someone else pointed out that while we do have something very similar to the American 'pig in a blanket' in the UK, it's a distinctly different food: “IT’S LITERALLY A SAUSAGE ROLL OMG," they said on X.
Another agreed: “Wait… Pigs in blankets in America are sausages wrapped in pastry? My dude - that’s called a sausage roll. Pigs in blankets are sausages wrapped in bacon. Ironically, wrapping a sausage in bacon seems more American than wrapping it in pastry.”
A third said, aghast: “Did you know that in America, their pigs in blankets are hotdogs in CROISSANT DOUGH?!"
That's something to bear in mind if you're ever planning to spend Christmas in the States.
