An interesting dairy staple has become the latest food trend to take over TikTok, and with just three ingredients, you can make it yourself at home.

You've probably heard of Greek yoghurt or set yoghurt - but what about 'stretchy yoghurt'?

Well, if not then, you may do soon as this fascinating food has been going viral on social media.

The unique dairy product is similar to regular yoghurt, but has one textural twist which has left people obsessed, with stores selling the product in China, Jakarta, Singapore, Ontario, and New York City.

Rather than the creamy and smooth texture you might normally associate with yoghurt, this variety appears to be able to be pulled and stretched out, almost like melted mozzarella or mochi.

You might assume that this texture requires a sophisticated fermentation technique to achieve, but the truth is actually far simpler.

Rather than a highly complex and closely managed fermentation, the yoghurt's unique texture is achieved by adding a kind of starch such as tapioca, rice, or potato starch.

This binds the yoghurt together and creates a viscous texture, which has gone viral on TikTok.

As for how it's served, you can have it with a whole variety of toppings, including fresh fruit, 'wet' toppings which appear to be fruity syrups or sauces, and dried toppings to add another textural element.

The texture of the yoghurt itself appears to be similar to mochi - the Japanese sweet made from rice, which has a unique starchy quality.

Stretchy yoghurt doesn't quite have the same structural integrity of mochi, but it is somewhere in between mochi and regular yoghurt.

After opening up in several cities around the world, the recipe appears to have landed in New York, with a branch of Mamie's Yoghurt opening up in the city to sell the latest trending food.

And if there isn't one near you, but you're desperate to try it, you can make stretchy yoghurt at home with this simple recipe.

Social media creator Kat Lieu, who uses the handle @subtleasian.baking, explained that all you need is Greek yoghurt, milk, and tapioca.

Combine half a cup each of the yoghurt and milk with a quarter cup of tapioca in a microwave-safe bowl.

Cover it with cling film, poking holes in the top, and put the mixture in the microwave for two minutes before taking it out and giving it a good stir to combine.

This will then be ready to enjoy, though you could put it in the fridge if you wanted, as well as adding any toppings you might fancy.

It again shows how it's often the simplest of recipes and ideas which can be the most interesting.
