A woman’s bagel-slicing ‘hack’ is going viral on social media, with fans questioning exactly how she managed the controversial cuts.

When it comes to the ring-shaped bread, everyone has their personal preparation ways. Some love nothing more than chomping down on a classic cream cheese and smoked salmon combo, while others like nibbling on toasted cinnamon and raisin bagels with lashings of butter for breakfast.

Warburtons suggest stuffing your carbohydrates with garlic puree or chopping them up to turn them into delectable chocolate churro bites.

Others are likely to prefer ripping bits off and dipping the bitesize morsels into a sweet sauce, and some may choose to vertically slice their bagel up like they do in St. Louis, according to Chowhound.

Over on Reddit, a bread fiend has documented how their wife chooses to cut her bagel into five equal pieces.

They claim that this is so their significant other may ‘maximise topping enjoyment’.

To do so, she apparently uses an ‘old and cheap’ bread knife with a thin blade.

“Mostly it is a skill, I often botch even 3 slices, and she did 6 once just for fun,” said the woman’s husband.

Redditors have been praising the woman’s ability to keep such a sturdy hand while cutting the carb, with one writing: “Does she also perform microscopic surgery in her free time?”

Another said: “I’m gonna need a five slice toaster for that cause that’s a genius way to maximise the toasted surface area of the bagel.”

“There’s something so fascinatingly criminal about this,” remarked a third.

A fourth replied: “I struggle to cut bagels in half sometimes. But 5 slices? I’m beyond impressed.”

Some else typed: “Please, I want her secrets, this is genius for topping lovers.”

It turns out that the Reddit users’ wife isn’t the only woman to cause waves online with their bagel-hacking method.

In March 2024 a clip resurfaced of Ina Garten, American cook and host of the Barefoot Contessa, revealing that she liked to chop her bread up into thirds.

“Instead of having a big, thick bagel, I like to cut it in thirds,” she explained via a Food Network clip. “So instead, you get a nice little sandwich.

“I think it tastes better.”

Late last year, Parade talked to Grace Elkus Bianconi, a food writer and recipe developer with almost 500,000 Instagram followers.

She reasoned that slicing a bagel in half crosswise to make two half-moons and then lengthwise almost all the way through makes it ‘easier to slice’, leading to less wobble and a more accurate cut.

“A flat part of the bagel is on the cutting board rather than the rounded part.”

Bianconi previously shared the ‘hack’, known as the ‘Magic Slice’, with her Instagram followers - and they had a lot to say on the matter.

“Okay this is actually genius,” one social media user penned.

A second noted: “Yep, I felt so smart when I figured it out myself a few years ago! Definitely the neat way to share a bagel!”

Philadelphia Cream Cheese also commented on the post, writing: “So double the cream cheese? Genius.”

Be right back, we’re nipping out to grab some bagels and try the methods out for ourselves!
