Matty Healy horrified fans by eating raw tomahawk steak on stage

The 1975 singer has caused a stir by taking a bite out of some rare meat during a performance.

The 1975 singer Matty Healy has found himself in some controversies over the years, and this one had a particularly unnerving effect on some of his fans.

In 2023, The 1975 were performing at Finsbury Park in London alongside Cigarettes After Sex, Bleachers, The Japanese House and American Football.

As the set drew to a close, Healy unbuttoned his shirt, seemed to glug down a few mouthfuls of wine, dropped to his knees and bit into a raw steak.

It’s not quite Ozzy Osborne biting a bat’s head off, but it nevertheless drew a shocked response from festival-goers.

Completing the strange display, Healy then removed his shoes and put the protein to good use with a few push-ups. He then climbed head-first into a TV set. Why not?

Footage of the event drew plenty of disparaging comments on social media.

"I was so lost when this happened. It started so normal," said one TikTok user.

"This is awful," said another.

"I want to burn my eyes," a third added.

Others seemed decidedly less horrified: "Just feels like a waste of a good steak to me!"

"Edgy," said another.

Someone else branded the display as “literally iconic”.

Others noted the health risks of biting into raw meat: "Is that safe to do?"

Unsurprisingly, it isn’t.

"It's important to prepare and cook food safely,” says the NHS. “Cooking meat properly ensures that harmful bacteria on the meat are killed.

"If meat is not cooked all the way through, these bacteria may cause food poisoning.

"Bacteria and viruses can be found all the way through poultry and certain meat products (such as burgers). This means you need to cook poultry and these sorts of meat products all the way through.

"When meat is cooked all the way through, its juices run clear and there is no pink or red meat left inside."

The health implications don’t seem to have mattered much to Healy, with many fans of The 1975 knowing he’s done it on multiple occasions. One instance was filmed at Madison Square Garden.

He’s not the only celebrity to cause a stir by sticking raw meat in his mouth. Patrice Evra, retired professional footballer renowned for his time with Manchester United and the France national team, once filmed himself smacking and licking some raw chicken.

If you’re wondering what on earth that was about, you’re not alone.
