Viral Five Guys receipt that prompted huge debate on chain’s ‘out of control’ prices

The line between fast food and fine dining is getting thinner and thinner. Price-wise, anyway.

A burger and chips is a go-to for a quick, hearty fast food option, and most of us don’t expect to spend too much to get hold of this sacred combo.

That said, your average Maccies is more expensive than it used to be. A Big Mac will set you back by £5.49 on Deliveroo, and a large meal with a side of fries and a drink is going for £8.49.

In these inflation-laden times, a hefty burger, chips and drink for less than a tenner isn’t bad, and it’s a good watermark for comparing with other fast food chains.

Five Guys has long been the more expensive option, of course, with the caveat that your burger is cooked fresh every time and any additional toppings are free.

When you buy a portion of chips, you can guarantee you’ll have a fistful or two extra waiting at the bottom of your bag, too.

All that being said, the prices at Five Guys have been controversial for a long time, and these cash-strapped times have had social media calling its prices ‘out of control’.

In 2024, X user @‌WallStreetSilv posted a photo of their Five Guys receipt from one of its US outlets, drawing plenty of consternation.

The receipt shows a bacon cheeseburger priced at $12.49 (£9.83), a small portion of fries costing $5.19 (£4.08) and a regular soda at $2.89 (£2.27), with the meal coming to $24.10 (£18.97) after tax and gratuity.

"Five Guys prices are out of control,” the user captioned the photo. “$24 for one person."

They said in a follow-up post: "Guess I was expecting about $12 to $15 per person for Five Guys. $22 (without tip) just seems to cross a line.

"What is the right amount these days?"

Naive as this user may have been to expect a meal at Five Guys for less than $15 (£11.30), plenty of commenters shared their shock at the premium pricing.

"Fast food becoming a luxury meal is a sign of the times," said one person.

"$5 for a small fries is highway robbery,” said another. “It's literally just a potato and some salt."

A third added: "Five Guys was always overpriced. Same meal was $15 ten years ago."

There were some who were happy to go against the grain, however, saying the quality offered at Five Guys justifies the price.

"Five Guys has always been more premium than others, though," said one such user.

If you thought that receipt held some eye-watering numbers, check these out.

As of April 2025, a bacon cheeseburger is priced on Deliveroo in London at £14.45, a regular fries costs £6.25, and the milkshakes cost £6.75.
