McDonald's 'most-mentioned limited-time product' is finally back

A marketing expert has also commented on the cult item's strange ties with cryptocurrency

A McDonald’s classic has relaunched in the US for a limited time, but it’s the crypto community who appear most excited for the fast food item’s return.

In the 1980s, McDonald’s restaurants were already slinging out 20-piece Chicken McNuggets boxes, as well as the flash-in-the-pan McSpaghetti, deep-fried cherry and apple pies, and other sweet treats like cookies, sundaes and a vanilla soft-serve cone selection.

Another 80s favourite was the McRib - a seasoned, boneless, barbecue-flavoured pork rib sandwiched between a toasted homestyle bun, and topped with slivered onions and tangy pickles.

Following the success of the Snack Wrap’s return, the fast food giant announced the McRib sandwich would be making a comeback in some major US cities, including Miami, St. Louis, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Cleveland, Seattle and Atlanta.

First introduced to Maccie’s restaurants in 1981, the cult classic will only be available while supplies last.

So if you want a bite of the company’s ‘most-mentioned limited-time product online, higher than other evergreen items’, you have to act fast.

McDonald’s senior marketing director, Guillaume Huin, posted about the McRib on X, describing its strange tie with cryptocurrency traders.

“Funnily enough and entirely independent of McDonald's involvement, the McRib has recently found new meaning on [the] internet within the trading and crypto community, as some claim Bitcoin and S&P500 tend to perform well after the McRib makes a comeback, particularly in 2017, 2020, 2021.”

The marketing expert added: “Coincidentally, when the McRib returned to stores in December 2024, Bitcoin hit a new all-time high. Welcome back, Legend!”

Of course, there is no proven link between the meaty beauty and a cryptocurrency boom, but you must admit, it is a little bit strange, right?

With Bitcoin investors always looking for any hint of excitement, we can almost guarantee that the menu favourite’s return is already being watched by traders.

Whether or not we see a crypto boom this time around is yet to be seen.

If biting into a McRib again isn’t very high on your Christmas list, then McDonald’s does have another menu addition: the Holiday Pie.

Described by the eatery as ‘smooth custard nestled in a flaky, buttery crust glazed with sugar and topped with rainbow sprinkles’, the Holiday Pie could serve as your first festive flavour of the season.

"Not to be biased, but it just might be the greatest gift you can get for yourself or your friends and family,” the business teased, marking its nationwide release date on 14 November.

According to People, the handheld dessert was first introduced in 1999, becoming an instant and exclusive holiday classic.

Fans appear as equally excited for the return of the Holiday Pie and the McRib, with one X user typing: “ALL HAIL THE MCRIB!!!!!”

“IT’S HAPPENING!!! Holiday Pie count, day 1 Thank you,” commented someone else.

A third remarked in all capitals: “@McDonalds and yall better have my holiday pie from Thanksgiving to New Years this year or I’m gonna break all the menus.”
