McDonald's forced to ditch controversial item just months after launch following backlash

The chain has made a U-turn on one of its products

McDonald's has been forced to remove a controversial product after customers raised safety concerns.

The fast-food chain introduced the item in a bid to 'innovate and improve' its products, but unfortunately, McDonald's has had to make a U-turn after revealing that it didn't 'meet expectations'.

Now, if you've ordered a hot drink from Maccies in recent months, you may have noticed that the chain had introduced a new, eco-friendly lid, to replace its usual plastic style.

Although the paper lids were brought in as a step towards making their packaging more recyclable, customers were not impressed and were left raising safety concerns over the product.

According to The Sun, as a result of the backlash, the new environmentally friendly option has now been scrapped.

One staff member told the publication: “The paper lids weren’t secure enough and they were falling off while people were drinking - meaning they got burned and covered in coffee.”

While another said: “One thing we kept hearing was that coffee was leaking out.”

Over on X, customers are making similar comments, with one person claiming they had 'spilt coffee' all over themselves, while others complained that the lid began to 'disintegrate' after a couple of sips.

Well, fair play to McDonald's, who have taken the feedback seriously and brought back the original, plastic lids as a temporary measure until they can come up with a more permanent, sustainable product.

And people were more than happy to hear about the change, with one person writing online: "I am so pleased, McDonald’s has finally seen common sense and gone back to plastic lids for the hot drinks."

While another said: "Have McDonald's finally ditched those awful paper lids?!"

And a third added: "Looks like the local McDonald's has seen the light and gone back to plastic coffee cup lids rather than those "green" crap paper based ones, victory for common sense?"

A McDonald's spokesperson told FOODbible: “We’re constantly listening to customer feedback, and we continue to innovate our packaging just like our menu. Last year we moved to moulded fibre McCafe cup lids as part of our journey to 100% of our packaging being made from renewable, recycled, or certified sources.

"However, on this occasion the innovation didn’t meet expectations and customers told us they weren’t satisfied. Our goal remains firmly in place, but we will be temporarily returning to plastic lids while we find a suitable alternative that performs to the standards we require.”

In other Maccies news, diners from across the UK this week have been left concerned, with many fearing that the chain had stopped including bottles of water in kids' Happy Meals.

Many had taken to social media to complain, but a McDonald's spokesperson has since clarified the situation to FOODbible.

They said: “We’re currently experiencing a temporary supply issue, which means some of our restaurants are out of stock of 250ml bottled water normally included in Happy Meals. "Customers are being offered tap water as an alternative, as well as the usual other Happy Meal drink options. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and are working hard to resolve the issue. 250ml bottled water is expected to return to our Happy Meal menu later this week.”
