KFC announces return of cult favourite burger after five years

It's back and better than ever

You know when you really love an item on the menu at your favourite fast food joint, and then they have the audacity to get rid of it? There's no other heartbreak like it.

We know that products have to come and go - after all, it's part of the rich tapestry of life - but that doesn't make it any harder.

But there's one cult classic that's making an unexpected return to KFC menus, following years of begging from fans.

The wait is finally over for chicken lovers, as KFC has just confirmed that the Zinger Double Down is making a comeback, and we're not the only ones losing our minds.

Yes, the double stacked burger that broke the internet is back on UK menus, but you'll need to be quick - there's always a catch - as it's only for a limited time.

For those who somehow missed the hype last time, the Zinger Double Down is not your average burger.

It’s two fiery Zinger fillets acting as the 'buns', with Supercharger mayo, two slices of melted cheese, and a crispy hash brown sandwiched in between. No bread. No nonsense. Just pure, unapologetic chicken chaos.

It’s long been considered the holy grail of fast food, earning legendary status among fans when it first hit menus years ago. But in 2020, KFC cruelly axed it, sparking half a decade of heartbreak and hungry petitions from its most loyal followers (I may have been one of them).

Then, earlier this year, dreams came true when the Double Down briefly returned in February 2025, and in that short window, over 1.1 million of them were sold. But before anyone could order seconds, it disappeared again, leaving fans devastated.

Now, KFC has officially confirmed the Zinger Double Down is making its final comeback of the year. It’ll hit UK stores from 13 October and stick around until 9 November, or until stocks run out (which let’s be honest, won’t take long).

As for price, it’s had a slight glow-up since February and is now costing £7.99 on its own, £9.49 as part of a meal or £10.99 in a meal box. Totally worth it for a bite of fast food history.

Speaking earlier this year, Phoebe Syms, brand manager at KFC UK & Ireland, said: "The Double Down isn’t just a menu item — it’s a KFC icon with a cult following like no other. Fans have been calling for its return for years, and we’re beyond excited to finally bring it back with a fiery twist!

"We’ve made sure it’s everything they remember and more, from the legendary crispy chicken ‘buns’ to brand-new packaging that keeps every bite as perfect as the first. This is all about giving our fans the ultimate Double Down experience they’ve been craving — but they’ll need to be quick, as it’s only here for a limited time!"

Fans have already taken to social media to celebrate. One Reddit user called it 'the holy grail of fast food', while another said: “The stoner in me will never forget this marvel of culinary wizardry. The arteries in me probably won’t either.”

Another wrote: “Don’t understand why they took this away — loved the Double Down and the sauce with it. Would visit KFC more if they still had it.”

Honestly, fair point.

Another summed it up best: “Hands down it was the best menu item KFC ever had.”

For die-hard fans, this may be the last chance to get their hands on the OG burger before it disappears again, and possibly for good. So if you’ve been waiting five years for that first bite of spicy, cheesy, crispy perfection, mark your calendars because from 13 October, the Zinger Double Down is officially back - but not for long.
