Fast-food brands like Domino’s and KFC have responded to PlayStation’s physical media cull, joking that the age of the ‘digital pizza’ could finally be upon us.
Late last month, Rockstar Games announced that neither the Standard Edition nor the Ultimate Edition of GTA VI would include a disk.
Anyone who purchases a physical edition will instead receive a download code inside the box, Rockstar confirmed in a press release.
Days later, Sony boldly announced that PlayStation would be shuttering the production of physical discs in January 2028.
Advert
"This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs,” PlayStation said in a statement, confirming games released up until the cut off date would not be affected.

Backlash across social media has been rife, with one Instagram user calling the decision a ‘slap in the face’.
Another reported: “Moving to Xbox. I like to own what I buy. Thanks, Sony.”
“You've lost the fan in me - so not upgrading my PS anymore. Not buying any Sony products either,” someone else said.
After days of silence, Sony uploaded its first Instagram post since breaking the news on Monday (6 July).
The company shared a clip from Pluribus featuring Rhea Seehorn as Carol Sturka, but made no mention of the online backlash. Meanwhile, the official PlayStation account has yet to make a post on Instagram.
LADbible Group has previously contacted PlayStation for comment.

Domino’s and KFC weigh in on physical media’s demise
On 2 July, KFC’s dedicated Spanish X account took to the platform to seemingly mock PlayStation and spark debate.
“Breaking news,” the brand wrote in all capitals, “KFC will stop offering its physical format starting today. Its products can only be consumed through its app in fake PNG format.”
Another post joked about releasing a sauce DLC, players stumping up for the 'FriedChicken Pass' within the next 365 days, and threatening that Pinterest would come to your house if you try to pirate the PNGs.

The tongue-in-cheek post has spurned others to comment on the Sony debacle, including Domino’s Pizza UK, who jested that digital pizzas were the future of eating.
“In response to trends in the gaming industry, as of April 1 2027, Domino's UK will cease production of physical pizzas and shift to production of digital pizzas only.
"Consumers will be able to download our full range of delicious pizza codes and, using the power of the imagination, enjoy them in an entirely virtual sense."
The brand wrote in the comments: “At the same time, our much-loved 'Domin-oh-hoo-hoo' catchphrase will be updated to 'Domin-oh-hoo-whose-dumb-idea-was-this'?”

Domino’s also referenced the fact that PlayStation has remained silent amid the backlash. In a follow-up tweet, the fast-food favourite wrote: “We’ve sold 172,288,912 pizzas since PlayStation last posted.”
Fans have praised both Domino’s and KFC for their comments, with one typing: “Please keep roasting them. This only helps your PR.”
“It would be a pleasure to receive you all. A host will 3-D print a Dominator pizza—just wait until I can redeem the pre-sale for the new flavor; after all, I already bought the box,” joked someone else.
A third said: “How great, just that format wasn't to my liking.”
“Sony is getting mogged by a pizza company! Thank you @Dominos_UK for being based!”
