It's hard to believe that it's only been a few weeks since Christmas, and we're already fuming at the price of Easter chocolate.

Fans have been seriously miffed to see a standard 256g bag of the sweet treats from Cadbury now stands at £6.55, equivalent to a whopping £25.59 per kg.

But those wanting to get ahead of their Easter haul are in luck as savvy shoppers have noticed a way to stock up for almost half the price.

Over on Amazon, the same sized bag will set you back just £4.50 (equivalent to £17.58, around a third cheaper). Or you can grab a 1kg bag for £15, representing a saving of 42 percent.

The 'shrinkflation' scandal explained

This year, disgruntled shoppers have noted that the prices of our beloved Cadbury Mini Eggs has gone up, while the size of the packet has gone down.

Commonly referred to as 'shrinkflation', the serving size shrinks but the price increases, and it is becoming more and more common.

According to shoppers online, the 80g packets cost £1.15 in 2019, but they have now gone up to £2, while the bag weight has shrunk by 7.5 percent.

The much-loved chocolate first hit shelves way back in Mini Eggs in 1967, and now the candy-coloured eggs are an essential part of Easter for many people.

Fans have been raging about the price increase online, after the previous 80g bag has now dropped to 74g, but the price has increased.

Ranting on X, one commenter wrote: “Not only are Easter chocolates on sale too early they have doubled in price and lowered the weight and changed ingredients."

“Bag of 18 mini eggs £2. What a joke. I have stopped eating chocolate just in a silent protest at the prices that are charged," they fumed.

Other critics were annoyed that the bigger 256g bag has had a price increase, too.

“I f****ng hate this country so much. What do you mean a family bag of mini eggs costs over £6???? A person on minimum wage has to pay an hour of their time to purchase 2 bags of Mini Eggs? Why aren’t the people angrier,” someone else wrote. “F**k this f****ng country I hate the UK.”

"By 2027, Cadbury will sell you the concept of a Mini Egg. £1.74 for a bag containing a single atom of chocolate and a note saying ‘Imagine the rest’. Now that's proper #GamesGone shrinkflation – the eggs are on VAR review and ruled offside," mused another.

What have Cadbury said about the price hikes?

When questioned about the rising prices and shrinking sizes, Mondelēz International, the company which owns Cadbury, told FOODbible: “We understand the economic pressures that consumers continue to face and any changes to our product sizes is a last resort for our business. However, as a food producer, we are continuing to experience significantly higher input costs across our supply chain, with ingredients such as cocoa and dairy, which are widely used in our products, costing far more than they have done previously.

"Meanwhile, other costs like energy and transport, also remain high. This means that our products continue to be much more expensive to make and while we have absorbed these costs where possible, we still face considerable challenges.

“As a result, we are having to make carefully considered changes to the recommended promotional price alongside small weight reductions to our Mini Eggs Bags (74g) so that we can continue to provide consumers with the brands they love, without compromising on the great taste and quality they expect.”
