A nanny hailed as 'TikTok's Mary Poppins' has listed five foods that she avoids giving to children under the age of six, including one 'party pooper'.

Diet is a big question, particularly when it comes to what to feed smaller children.

Obviously it's very important to look after a child's health with their diet, but the nature of parenting means that sometimes it can be a case of just trying to get a little one to eat something.

Nonetheless, one social media user has shared a few foods that she thinks people should avoid giving to children under six, for a good reason.

TikToker Danielle Anne Manton-Kelly from the UK, who uses the handle @enchantednanny, frequently shares parenting advice to her channel, and listed some no no foods.

Popcorn

The first is popcorn, because the cinema snack is a choking hazard.

She explained: “Popcorn is light as a feather, which means that if you were to have some in your mouth and sharply inhale, which children tend to do because they tend to be running around or moving or laughing, that's gonna go down into the airway and it then cannot get out.”

If you do give a child popcorn, Danielle advised, make sure they not distracted while eating it.

Marshmallows

A similar problem comes from marshmallows, because they are 'very sticky'.

“If they get lodged in the airway they're not going to move," she said, "it's gonna be extremely difficult to get that out because they're light and they're sticky and they are the size of an airway.”

Grapes

Another potential choking hazard is grapes, with Danielle saying: “I always cut my grapes in half and then half again lengthways and that is because a grape is the absolute perfect size of a child's airway."

There was also one food which she worried made her a 'party pooper'.

Cocktail sausages

This was cocktail sausages, which can be a staple of children's parties.

But she warned that these too can be a choking hazard, saying: "They are really dangerous - they're in a skin and that can go for other bits of meat as well, because meat doesn't tend to break down so well."

Lollipops

Finally, there was lollipops, especially the spherically-shaped ones, as these can come off the stick and become lodged in a throat.

People were left shocked by the advice, and took to the comments to share their views.

One replied: “Wow I didn’t know about popcorn - not that I have done it but didn’t have a clue!”

A second wrote: "Every time I take my toddler to birthday parties, the table is full of choking hazards that none of the children there are old enough for.”

Meanwhile a third person said: “I didn’t realise cocktail sausages were dangerous! I normally quarter them lengthways and he’s luckily been fine.”
