For all its flaws, fast food is certainly moreish. Maybe that’s a flaw in and of itself, but who’s keeping score?
One of life’s simplest pleasures is getting through your burger and side only to look in your paper bag and find some stray chips who thought they’d got away with it.
Au contraire, mon chippies; prepare to get munched.
One fast food outlet that’s particularly loved for its chips - and a near-guaranteed bottom-of-the-bag surplus - is Five Guys.
Value for money probably isn’t the first thing you think of when Five Guys come to mind, not least when a cheeseburger there will set you back by an eye-watering £12.75, but when it comes to chips they’re definitely a generous bunch.
So, why is it that this burger emporium known for its mind-bending prices is so cavalier about adding extra chips to everyone’s bag?
As the five guys at Five Guys have explained on their website, it’s because the brand “believes in generosity”.
“Our fries are served in a white cup which varies in size depending on the portion ordered,” it added.
“Plus, we always add an ‘extra scoop’ of fries in the bag as we believe in generosity!”
They also added: “We suggest sharing the fries if you are visiting with other people.” Fat chance, buddy.
“We recommend that the serving size for 1 Little portion is between 1-2 people, and for 1 Large portion is between 3-4 people, although it’s up to you!”
The cynics among us might say that’s a somewhat romantic way of framing a marketing ploy. After all, finding extra chips always feels like you’re getting a little something extra. You’re beating the system when you eat at Five Guys! Come again!
But it’s tough to be cynical when you’re wrapped in the simple joy of finding out you’ve got more chips to plough through.
Not content with addressing one common question, the website also tackled the common complaint that you can’t ask for a rare or medium burger. Well, you can ask, but you won’t get one.
“We only serve well done and juicy beef patties at Five Guys,” said the company.
“By doing this, we are able to achieve two goals - a consistent product, and meeting/exceeding code standards for ground beef.
“We understand that there are varying opinions on what level a burger should be cooked for optimal flavour.
“Our opinion is that our burgers taste best cooked juicy and well done!”
So there you have it: another pair of mysteries can consider themselves solved.
