A mass shooting in Bangkok, Thailand has left six people dead.

The shooting took place on 28 July 2025 at the Or Tor Kor food market, per a police official’s statement to Reuters, with the gunman having taken his own life following the massacre.

Security footage shows people attempting to flee the scene as the gunman opened fire. A separate clip showed the attacker holding a handgun as he ran through a car park from the main entrance to the market. He was wearing a black t-shirt and carried a backpack on his front.

The shooter arrived at the market just before 1pm local time and soon began firing multiple shots. Following the attack, he fled the scene before taking his own life.

Four of the identified victims were market security guards, and the fifth was a woman. Two other victims, both women, survived the attack but were taken to hospital.

“Police are investigating the motive. So far it’s a mass shooting,” Worapat Sukthai, deputy police chief of Bangkok’s Bang Sue district, told AFP. He added that the authorities were assessing a ‘possible link’ between the shooting and the unrest on the Thailand-Cambodia border.

Police have identified the shooter as a 61-year-old former security guard.

Or Tor Kor market is situated near the Chatuchak market, and its renowned for its wide variety of fresh, local produce.

One eyewitness, who was drinking coffee with a friend at the time of the attack, said he and other patrons had hidden in the coffee shop after police shut the door.

"It didn’t sound like a gunshot, but when people started to panic and the Royal Project [coffee shop] staff went out to check, they pushed the people to safety. As for the two of us, we parked our cars near the donation point for the soldiers of Mr Kan Chom Phalang," the eyewitness told The Matichon.

Police have said that no tourists were harmed in the shooting.

In 2023, a 14-year-old boy was arrested after a shooting at a Bangkok mall that killed two people. At the time it was reported that the suspect had a history of mental health problems and had not been taking his medication.

Jakkraphan Nakharisi, a 29-year-old an ice cream seller at the time, told the BBC:

"There were four to five of them. And then silence. Then there were probably another two shots. Then I heard someone in my shop shout, 'There's some shooting!'

"I ducked behind the ice cream tank immediately. I didn't know where to run. I thought I couldn't just go out recklessly."
