A batch of Ritz Crackers has been urgently recalled after it was identified as posing a potentially life threatening risk.
An announcement from Mondelēz Global LLC confirmed the voluntary recall, which is affecting 'cracker sandwiches' products in eight US states.
It wasn't so much a problem with the sandwiches themselves which caused the recall, rather an undeclared detail that could pose a potentially deadly danger.

Products containing allergens such as peanuts have to be properly labelled so that someone with that allergy can avoid them.
In this case, however, the products were labelled as the cheese variety rather than the allergen-containing peanut butter variety.
States affected by the recall include New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Alabama, with the recall affecting some batches of the Peanut Butter Cracker Sandwiches.
The recall notice said: "The affected cartons include individually wrapped packs that may be incorrectly labeled as Cheese variety even though the product may be a Peanut Butter variety.

"People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts may risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions by consuming this product."
The company explained that the outer cartons for the product were labelled correctly, including a warning that the product 'contains peanuts'.

Peanut allergies can have severe side effects, with the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) saying that they can include vomiting, wheezing, facial and tongue swelling, diarrhoea, and hives.

In extreme cases, the FDA noted that it can also cause difficulty breathing, which can cause death.
The batch which is affected is containers with the UPC 44000 07584 2 (six-pack containers) and have Best-by dates of 8 January 2026 and 15 January 2026.
At the time of writing, there have not been any reports of illness or injury reported to Mondelēz Global LLC, and the company has clarified that it issued the recall 'out of an abundance of caution'.
If you have a peanut allergy then you should not consume the affected products, and should immediately discard them if they have purchased them.
