A British food safety body is calling for the expulsion of a popular American import, warning chemicals used in the producing process may mutilate DNA and increase the risk of cancer.
It’s easy to get swept up in the United States candy craze when there seems to be a confectionery cove on every corner of the high street.
These Stateside-inspired havens sell everything from boxes of Mike & Ike and Milk Duds to packets of gooey Chips Ahoy! and Wonka Nerds.
If you’ve ever bought anything from an American sweet shop, then you’ll know the treat’s flavour profile can often be very different than what you’re used to.

This is because food laws vastly differ between the US and Britain, with the latter imposing more stringent standards and being stricter when it comes to precautionary principles.

In a new update, the UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) has doubled-down on an American sweet recall notice previously issued to retailers operating in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
The agency stated on 16 January that a number of Jolly Rancher products, produced by The Hershey Company, contain Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons (MOAH), which naturally occurs in crude oil and petroleum, as per NSF International.

According to the FSA, they may also contain mineral oil saturated hydorcarbons (MOSH) that are ‘not compliant with UK laws’.
Whilst there is no immediate cause for concern for consumers that have eaten these products, as the food safety risk is low, MOAH is a 'known genotoxic carcinogen and may pose a safety risk' - particularly if consumed regularly, over a sustained period, the agency explained.
MOAH can cause serious damage to DNA and has the potential to increase the risk of cancer, particularly if consumed in high quantities over a substantial period of time.
The chemical compounds are classed as a genotoxic carcinogen, meaning there’s no exposure without risk to human health, the agency added.

The Jolly Rancher products include in the UK recall include: Filled Pops, Berry Gummies, Hard Candy Fruity 2 in 1, Freeze Dried Candy, ‘Misfits’ Gummies, and Hard Candy.
Any businesses importing these products are advised to discontinue practice immediately.

The agency has also instructed companies to cease selling the sweets and undertake product withdrawals and recalls as soon as possible.

The Hershey Company is reportedly working ‘collaboratively’ with the FSA, taking action to totally remove these products from the UK market.
Despite the business’ ‘proactive action to remove unsafe products from UK markets in 2024, and their subsequent decision not to supply the UK market going forward’ other companies still insist on important and selling the products in the British market, the agency claimed.
The FSA has requested enforcing authorities in the UK to take action to remove products from the market to protect consumers.
If you have bought the banned confectionary, then you are advised to cease consumption and dispose of the substance.
