McDonald's fans have a big gripe after noticing major change to McFlurries

Redditors reckon something has changed in the way McFlurries are made.

McFlurries are one of McDonald’s first names on the team sheet. They were first devised by a Canadian franchisee in 1995, and then made their way over the border to the US in 1997.

Since then, they’ve become an essential component of the McDonald’s menu, with the fast food chain regularly shuffling new flavours in and out. They’re all made with a soft serve ice cream, and they’re typically whipped up with toppings from confectionery brands and a bit of syrup.

While they’re an undisputed modern classic of the McDonald’s menu enjoyed by fans the world over, some Reddit users have been lamenting a shift they’ve noticed in the way they’re served.

“Got the s’mores McFlurry,” began the thread’s author. “Not good at all…not even mixed and do you know why? It’s because they don’t even serve them in the cups with the clean plastic spoon anymore. The spoon with the hole at the top that was used to MIX the Mcflurry. $5 for this…. What a waste.”

This is reflective of a change McDonald’s announced in 2022 aimed at reducing packaging and cutlery waste, but Redditors think staff have stopped mixing McFlurries on customers’ behalf, too.

“There are allegedly some locations that still mix it but my experience has been that it’s just toppings dumped on the last few years,” said another.

“I used to get the Oreo McFlurries (we're talking like 20 years ago) and have a friend who worked there put a shot of hot fudge for the sundaes in before they mixed it,” reminisced one user.

“It would soften the ice cream a little more and (obviously) turn it far more chocolatey. It was delicious. I'm glad I haven't gotten one in a long time, if this is what they are now. I'd rather remember them as they were lol.”

Another chimed: “Yeah why are they in random paper cups now? I haven't bought one since they did that.” As to why that’s such a big problem, it’s anyone’s guess.

“All their new McFlurry flavors have a distinct chemical sweetness taste that is truly off-putting,” bemoaned another with a conversational tangent. “Shame.”

“Christ, if all they're doing is dumping M&Ms onto some ice cream and not stirring it, you can do that at home,” said one responding to the above image. “What's the point?”

“They're supposed to be mixed,” said yet another. “We have reusable spoons to mix them. If they're not mixing them, they're being lazy. I'd hand it back and ask for it to be mixed.”

A final comment: “Jeez they're just being lazy... We still have the stirring machine it's just a durable style of the spoon that stays in the kitchen now. Wtaf.”

FOODBible has approached McDonald’s for comment.
