Going the extra mile for the sake of your colleagues is an underrated noble act, not least when you’ve absolutely got better places to be.

For Mykale Baker, a Burger King team member, he was fresh from his high school graduation when he caught wind of his colleagues being under pressure with a busy day.

Despite no doubt wanting to celebrate his graduation with friends and family, he went into work in his gown and medals to put a shift in.

Touched by his dedication, customer Maria Mendoza set up a GoFundMe to raise cash for Mykale’s college fees, and the story soon picked up a lot of traction.

With an initial goal of $60,000 (£44,500), the donation page has racked up $81,731 (£61,000) as of May 30th 2025.

In the GoFundMe’s description, Maria wrote: “While many graduates spent the night celebrating with friends and family, one young man quietly showed the world what determination looks like.

“Just after receiving his diploma—still proudly wearing his medals—he reported to his shift at Burger King. He didn’t do it for attention. He doesn’t even know his story went viral. But thousands of people were moved by his dedication, humility, and work ethic.

“We’re starting this GoFundMe to help him take the next step: college. Let’s get together as a community and support this young kid. All funds raised will go directly toward helping him with college tuition, books, supplies, and other educational needs.

“Let’s show him that the world is watching—and rooting for him.”

On the 11Alive show on NBC, Mykale and Maria were interviewed at the outlet after the story went viral.

“I feel amazing because I’ve watched videos of this happen, and I ain’t never think it’d happen to me,” Mykale said in the interview.

“I am so thankful it happened to you,” added Maria.

If you’ve been touched by Mykale’s commitment to his colleagues, the GoFundMe page is still live and accepting donations. The comments feed on the page speaks to how affecting Mykale’s actions have been.

“Mykale, your work ethic speaks for itself. I am wishing you many years of success and blessings,” said one donor.

“Keep that same determination throughout your life a you’ll do great things Young Brother,” said another.

Another added: “What a hard working young gentleman! Very impressed by your story. As someone who did not graduate high school I felt moved to try to help you out. God bless you and yours.”

It’s always nice to see the milk of human kindness in such fine form.
