Word on the street is that Aldi is one of the better-paying supermarkets, although the decent wages come with some big expectations.

Aldi cashiers, for example, must scan items at a particular frequency in order to meet their standards for pace.

If you’ve ever wondered why the till experience at the budget supermarket is a whirlwind of beeps and no time to bag anything up, that’s why.

They’re tightly-run ships, and it seems the rigour is applied across the board.

As Aldi gears up for a refresh of its much-loved snacks and confectionary, the supermarket chain has opened a vacancy that should prick many a Brit’s ears.

If you’re in the market for a career change, or perhaps a cementing of longstanding expertise, apply today to be Aldi’s Official Crisp Taster 2025.

That’s right; if you fancy yourself as a crisp sommelier, this could be the job for you.

Sadly, it might not be a job for life. In fact, it seems pretty short-lived and relatively labour-free.

Whomsoever pulleth the crisps from the bag, so to speak, will be sent a selection of Aldi’s bestselling crisps to sample at home, including: Aldi’s Specially Selected Lightly Sea Salted Hand Cooked Crisps, Specially Selected Mature Cheddar and Red Onion Hand Cooked Crisps, the Snackrite Delta Strips, and Snackrite Cheese Flavour Cheezios.

From there, the job entails knocking together exclusive reviews of each option, covering their flavour, crunchiness, texture and appearance. The reviews will help to direct the Buying Team as they scope out new additions to the line-up.

This is the second year in which Aldi is hiring a crisp sommelier, with the 2024 hire being George Critchley, 39, whose day job is with the NHS. Critchley beat out the competition with the admission that his wedding was catered with several bags of Wotsits and Discos.

“Being Aldi’s Crisp Taster was an utter delight – I got to sample new flavours before anyone else and directly influence what hits the shelves,” said crispy Critchley.

“It wasn’t just fun, it was a genuine opportunity to shape the future of snacks for a whole nation. If you’re a true crisp connoisseur, this is a role you don’t want to miss.”

If you want to apply, you’ll certainly have some stiff competition. Actor Michelle Keegan posted to her 7.5 million Instagram followers, saying: “IS THIS TRUE @aldiuk because I am READY and available with lots of experience.”

To apply, send a video application to [email protected] to stake your claim to the job. You must include the following details, per the Aldi press release:

  • Full name
  • Age and location
  • Social media handles
  • A short video (no longer than one minute) explaining why they should be Aldi’s next Crisp Taster, including their favourite Aldi crisps and snacking opinions that may help them stand out.

Entries close on Thursday 21 August 2025, so get the applications in quick!

“After the success of last year with hundreds of entries, we welcome our shoppers feedback once again to make sure our latest products provide the quality, taste and price they deserve,” said Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, in the press release.

“Our range of crisps are going down a treat this year, so launching the role for a new Crisp Taster is the perfect way to encourage innovative ideas and delicious products onto shelves.”
