Making a drink for friends, family and colleagues can be a nervous experience.
Everyone has their own preferences, and some are more than happy to voice them. Gratitude be damned!
When it comes to making a brew on the set of a Hollywood movie the stakes are even higher. Not only are A-list actors used to a particular speed of living, largely dictated entirely by their own whims, but it’s important to network with your fellow stars to give you better odds of landing more parts.
And if it’s for Hollywood royalty, say for stuntman-actor-show-me-the-money extraordinaire Tom Cruise, it’s well worth getting on their good side.
Mr Cruise is known for being a set alpha along with being a seasoned producer, so you’d best hope he likes your coffee.

Sadly for Glen Powell, that wasn’t to be. The 36-year-old shared the screen with Cruise on Top Gun: Maverick, the 2022 sequel to the 1986 classic, and he got a poor review for a coffee he’d made for himself. It’s safe to say he wasn’t asked to knock a coffee together for the Jerry Maguire star after the event, anyway.
Speaking to GQ, Powell said: “Cruise gave me shit. Somebody was like, ‘Hey, do super coffee’.”
For the uninitiated, ‘super coffee’ is similar to coffee but incorporates various mushrooms and so-called superfoods to create a nutritious blend.
“So you put ashwagandha and reishi and Cordyceps and all these things in your coffee,” Powell continued.
“So I blended it, mixed it up, put it in this kind of a mason jar and brought it to set. I’m flying that day so I’m drinking this thing. But it’s all these ground-up mushrooms—it kind of looks like just this hearty, just disgusting…
“He kind of looks at me for a second, he’s like: ‘You look like you’re drinking a stool sample. What is that?’ I was like, ‘Okay, this one, I took this too far.’"
Tom Cruise is no stranger to dietary experimentation, and he reportedly subsists on a very low-calorie diet that prioritises lean proteins, anti-inflammatory and high-antioxidant foods, leafy greens and a regimented snack plan to keep him topped up with energy through the day.

Considering how the guy’s looking and performing at 63, it’s safe to say there are worthwhile dietary cues to take from the Mission: Impossible hit-maker.
As for sludgy mushroom coffee, if it’s too much for a guy who routinely jumps off buildings, hangs onto planes as they take off, and leans around corners on motorbikes like he’s trying to file down his own skull, maybe it should be too much for you too.
