Rising costs have struck in just about every nook and cranny of our lives.
Whether it’s an email excitedly informing us that our streaming services will cost another £2 a month, the longstanding 25% increase on your weekly shop compared with what you paid in 2021, or the fact that cheap flights are getting harder to come by, the squeeze never seems to end.
If you’re lucky enough to get away somewhere (even) hotter than the UK this summer, getting out there and paying for somewhere to stay aren’t necessarily the biggest expenditures you’ll face.

For some holidaymakers in Greece, a meal out came to the kind of sum you’d expect to cough up for a trip to Disneyland.
Having visited what’s alleged to be a notoriously pricey restaurant on Mykonos, the tourists sat down for a three-course meal with stunning views and enjoyed their visit in blissful ignorance as to what awaited them on the final bill.
Posting their experience on TripAdvisor, the visitor to DK Oyster on Platis Gialos beach claimed they had been charged €1000 (£861) for three dishes.
"The place is an abuse of price,” said Jessica L. “For a whole fish we paid 350 euros and for three dishes 1000 euros.
"The worst experience in Mykonos, because not even at Scorpions, which is one of the best places, did we pay that amount for a dinner for five people with a starter, main course, and dessert."
No matter how delicious the grub or spectacular the views, the price was enough to warrant a one-star attached to that review. As far as the comments were concerned, the withering rating was fair enough.
One previous customer, Sue, called DK Oyster a ‘shocking scam’. She added: "A staff member brought over an additional drink - unrequested - as a ‘gift’ for our group of four. It seemed like a friendly gesture... until it appeared on the bill."
Along with that, Sue claimed to have been charged €400 for a ‘handful’ of drinks, with one itemised component being €35 for a Coca-Cola.
They certainly aren’t alone, with over 1,000 other users leaving pretty brutal reviews for the place.

Apparently, another couple considered calling the police after DK Oyster charged almost €600 for pasta and smoothies, with €100 in service fees.
To help insulate yourself from these kinds of post-dinner stresses, be sure to have a good understanding of the prices before you order anything at a restaurant. As for ‘complimentary’ gifts, it’s often best to err on the side of cynicism there too.
