Greggs is officially going global as the iconic British bakery announced plans to expand outside of the UK for the first time this year.

It’s been a busy start to the year for Greggs: completing the legendary sausage roll trilogy with the release of its Chicken Sausage Roll, launching a new summer menu featuring layered pasta salads and sweet mango passion fruit doughnuts, and rolling out £3 iced matcha lattes.

Amid news that vending machines would soon be providing travellers with baked goods on the go, Greggs has detailed plans to launch internationally after spending the last 20 years on the British high street.

The upcoming shop is in collaboration with Lagarde Travel Retail and is engineered as a ‘test’ for the company to spread its wings in an overseas setting.

Greggs international will land in the departures lounge of Tenerife’s South Airport in the coming months, reported The Express.

Brits abroad and holidaymakers alike will be able to chow down on classic items alongside a new Spanish Omelette Roll and freshly squeezed orange juice.

The additions have been chosen to ‘give customers a refreshing taste of island life’, the outlet wrote.

The outlet will also have a dedicated seating area for up to 92 customers to languish in ahead of their flights.

Speaking about the ambitious expansion, Roisin Currie, Greggs chief executive, said: “Tenerife South Airport is a hub for millions of UK and international passengers each year, making it the ideal location to test spreading our wings in an overseas setting.

"It's an exciting milestone for Greggs as we bring a slice of home to the Canaries, and we're confident our great-value offering will resonate just as well under the Spanish sun as it does on the UK high street."

Javier Cagigal, chief executive of Lagardere Travel Retail Spain and Portugal, said that his company was ‘delighted’ to be partnering with Greggs.

"As passengers head home, this new opening gives them a familiar, comforting choice in departures - whether that's a last treat, a relaxed sit-down moment or something to ease the journey home.”

Greggs’ forthcoming venture comes after Wetherspoons officially opened its first pub in mainland Europe in early February.

The budget-friendly restaurant, named Castell de Santa Bàrbera, set up shop in the departures lounge of Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport.

Commanding a 1,000sq ft space, the airport restaurant features an outdoor terrace and an extensive food menu that includes standard breakfast options, as well as burgers, pizzas, and speciality dishes such as omelettes and garlic prawns.

Early success has seen two more sites in Spain being earmarked by the hospitality giant.

It’s understood that a Wetherspoons will open in terminals one and two at Barcelona-El Prat Airport next year.
